Dr. Steven Sampson Reports Highlights from BioBridge PRP Symposium in Venice Italy

Dr. Steven Sampson presented at the Biobridge Generation Regeneration Symposium in Venice Italy. http://www.biobridge-event.com/site/index.php/2013-preview/day-1-plenary-session.html The event hosted leading physicians in sports medicine, orthopaedics, aesthetics and ophthalmology mostly from Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. His talk focused on BMC Bone Marrow Concentration, Subchondroplasty, a quantitative approach to PRP and cutting edge adjuncts. He shared The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) Faculty, Mitchell Sheinkop’s data comparing hip & knee arthroplasty Vs. BMC therapy at 1 yr follow up. This data was previously presented at The Orthobiologic Institute (TOBI) Symposium in June. www.prpseminar.com

Interesting points to summarize include: (Note: none of this information serves as recommended treatment or guidelines to follow)
• Low dose Metformin may help program BMC cells towards osteoinduction
• RegenLab has developed a PRP/HA Hyaluronic Acid (non-cross linked) closed system that has European CE mark approval now
• HA may increase affinity for growth factor (GF)
• Italian doctors developed a contrast solution to inject into fractures under ultrasound to detect early healing vs. waiting months for radiographic callus signs
• Best not to activate PRP with thrombin or CaCl and rather have gradual GF release over 5-7 days.
• DNA Telomere strands shorten with age and may explain why injuries are more challenging to heal
• Not only are platelet counts important in concentration but the viability of their GF are critical
• Exosomes are small vesicles that transmit genetic info and may play a critical role in regenerative therapies.
• Researchers from Taiwan & France both presented studies that intra-operative use of PRP had superior results vs not including PRP for challenging meniscal tears.

Join Dr. Steve Sampson and field leaders for more of the latest research in PRP, BMC and other regenerative therapies, at The Orthobiologic Institute 5th Annual PRP & Regenerative Medicine Symposium with Cadaver Lab, June 6-7, 2013 in Las Vegas. www.prpseminar.com

Now more than ever is the time to work together and create protocols and standardization of our growing field. We look forward to seeing you in June.
